If the reading has moved, or the leak indicator dial is still turning, water is escaping somewhere on your supply — even with nothing running. It won't tell you where the leak is, but it confirms there is one.
Other Signs You Have a Leak Without Cutting Into a Wall
You don't need to open up a wall or lift a floorboard to suspect a leak. Everyday signs include:
- A water bill that's crept up with no change in household usage, or running, dripping or hissing sounds when everything is switched off.
- A patch of flooring that feels unusually warm, pointing to a leaking hot water or underfloor heating pipe.
- A musty or damp smell, or peeling, bubbling and discoloured paint or wallpaper, with no obvious cause.
- Flooring or skirting that feels soft or has some "give" underfoot, or mould appearing without explanation.
- Dropped water pressure, or condensation on windows in a room that's never normally prone to it.
- A patch of grass outside that's noticeably greener and lusher than the rest of the lawn — often a giveaway for a leaking external supply pipe.
Any one of these alone might be nothing. Two or three together, especially alongside a positive meter test, are worth acting on.
